Torre di Castelvecchio (Sagrado)

According to historian Tito Miotti, the tower standing near the railway underpass at locality Fornaci in Sagrado did not belong to the ancient castle, now disappeared, but was part of a series of defensive works put up by the Venetians against the Turks.

Sagrado Castle, known as Castelvecchio, was probably a Lombard fortification. Together with Farra and other localities around Cormons, Sagrado was one of many defensive settlements created by the Lombards along the eastern borders of their kingdom. This appears to be confirmed by a 16th century document where Sagrado is referred to as “Argis”, from the Latin word arx meaning arimannia (= Lombard administrative unit).
