In Buttrio there are numerous charming bars and restaurants where typical food and drink can be relished, for example, the Castello di Buttrio inn, the Al Parco trattoria and the Scacciapensieri (Drive away troubles) agritourism-restaurant which also provides overnight accommodation; reservations can be made at the Alle Officine inn.

The town can be reached by train or coach.

The Sottomonte Estate is situated in the Colli Orientali del Friuli (Eastern hills of Friuli) D.O.C. region, a hilly area which has always had a distinct wine making tradition. The estate extends over an area of 110 hectares and has belonged to the family of the present owners for over 500 years. Its favourable position, protected from harsh winds and cold weather by the Buttrio hills, allows the cultivation of all the native species of vines: from Ribolla Gialla to Schioppettino, from Verduzzo Friulano to Tocai Friulano, from Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso to Malvasia Istriana and last but not least the famous Picolit. Plus others not originally from Friuli such as Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and Bianco, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Nero. It’s worth noting that 70% of the existing vines come from an innovative grape plant nursery. In this nursery modern cloning techniques are the experimented in collaboration with the main wine-growing and university research centres.

Once a stable clone has been developed it is transformed into a so-called “pianta madre” (mother plant) and grafted for future vineyards. This procedure allows for the production of truly typical and high quality wines, never forgetting that a “great” wine comes from a “great” vineyard.
