Gabinetto numismatico

Founded at the beginning of the 19th century and enriched by numerous donations, the Museum documents the preference of Italian collectors for Roman coins over Greek ones. It houses a collection of around 60,000 coins and banknotes, and comprises valuable items such as Venetic drachmas, Celtic silver coins, Aquileian coins, Medieval coins, and Modern coins including the famous Palman.

The earliest benefactor was Count Tartagna, who donated his personal numismatic collection to the City of Udine; his example was soon followed by Luigi Cigoi, whose collection included a large number of 19th-century reproductions of ancient coins, now known as falsi cigoiani and very much sought after. Other benefactors include Abbot Del Negro from the Abbey of Aquileia e Counts de Brandis and Colloredo Mels.
