Museo di Ragogna

Housed on the ground floor of the Centro Comunale (Cultural centre), at locality San Giacomo, the Museum contains finds from excavations carried out by Dr Antonio Cerutti together with Ragogna’s archaeological association, Reuina.

At present the Museum includes a natural science section and only a limited archaeological display, collecting material dating from Prehistorical times; the objects excavated on the castle site, dating from the 1100s to the 1700s, are not yet on display.

Research activity at the Museum focuses on the valley of the River Tagliamento where Ragogna is located: its geology and environment are clearly illustrated with the aid of information panels, herbariums, and specimens of plants and animals arranged by habitat. The display continues with a brief introduction to human evolutionary history, accompanied by a collection of excavated finds from the Late Mesolithic to the Early Neolithic. A excavation site dating from this period, located locally near the Ragogna Lake, is illustrated with a “hands-on” educational approach. The influence of the environment on local economy is described in the final section of the Museum, devoted to caves and karst-type phenomena, to tuff quarries and coal mines.
