Mostron

The Mostron was the annual review of the military forces recruited to fight foreign wars, paraded before the citizens of Trieste. After the Mostron grand feasting took place with lavish banquets and tournaments.
This important moment of the Medieval history of Trieste is re-enacted today during the tournament of the Tredici Casade, when the noble knights taking part in the event are presented to the city of Trieste by representatives of the Medieval Magnificent Community of Trieste.
At 6:00pm on a Saturday in the Basilica of San Giusto the nobility of the Tredici Casade (Thirteen Houses) participate in a solemn religious function with Gregorian music and songs. At the end of the ceremony the nobility leave the church and form a procession which winds through the main streets of the city; behind them follow colourful flag-wavers, minstrels and jesters. The procession continues to the magnificent Piazza dell’Unità where flag-wavers from Faenza perform their choreographic flag-whirling. Then the procession continues towards Piazza Sant’Antonio, where jesters and fire eaters entertain onlookers in the Medieval streets. At the end of the shows the procession dissolves while the Magnificent Community of Trieste enters the church of St. Spiridion where a Serbian-Orthodox choir gives a Medieval folk song concert.
